Evelyn Dorothy Calkins
Evelyn Dorothy Calkins, 78, of Midland, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 16, 2003, at her home after an illness.
She was born on Jan. 31, 1925, the daughter of Harold and Bernice (Brady) Decker in Midland, where she was raised and educated. On Dec. 31, 1945, she married Clair L. Calkins in Midland. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage until his death on June 12, 1998. Evelyn had worked as a nurse's aid at the Midland Hospital, retiring after 24 years of service. She had volunteered for Midland Community Cnacer Services and loved to cook. She was an avid Detroit Tiger fan, but her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Evelyn will be dearly remembered as a very caring person, and upon receiving her terminal diagnosis knew she could depend upon her five best friends-her five children, Terry and Maggie Calkins of Midland, Steve and Karen Calkins of Sanford, Janet and Jim Sequin, Sue and Paul Sheskey and Becky Higgens, all of Midland; grandchildren Chad Calkins, Shannon (Andrew) Betsch, Jamie (Chad) Eyre, Jessie Sequin, Crista Calkins, Craig Calkins, Scott Higgins, Amanda Sheskey, Jimmey (Jennifer) Sequin and Justin Avery; two great-grandchildren; on great-granddaughter due to arrive in October; brothers Gerald Decker of Saginaw, Arnold Decker of Midland and Don Decker of Sanford; and her sisters, Sharon Koerner of Saranac and Barbara Jasman of Lansing. In addition to her parents and her husband, Clair, she was predeceased by her brother Bert Decker.
Funeral services will take place 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St. The Rev. D. David Kessler of the Free Methodist Church will officiate, with private interment to take place in Midland Cemetery.
